For the Teacher
Ties to Standards and Objectives
This engagement supports concept and vocabulary reinforcement, as well as informal assessment, associated with these NGSS dimensions: Science and Engineering Practices (1–8); Nature of Science (1–4).
Overview of Grade 2, Engagement 1
A series of interactive screens provides students with opportunities to act like a scientist by asking
questions, observing, classifying, and sorting. One at a time, students volunteer to guide the teacher by:
- recognizing which objects are found in nature,
- identifying patterns, and
- matching terms with definitions and examples.
What You Need
The means to project this interactive for whole-class viewing.
Advance Preparation
Plan a way to keep track of which students have already answered and which students are still eligible for a turn. Collectively, the screens include thirty items, so each student in the class should get at least one turn.
How to Facilitate
- Beginning with the screen following this one, project the engagement in the largest format possible for whole-class viewing.
- Go over expectations with students before beginning.
- Clicking on most text on the screen activates voice audio of the text. Or you may choose to do the reading aloud for students.
- For tasks that involve objects, identify the image. Point out words, and pronounce them aloud.
- Select a volunteer to guide you as you drag and drop each image to the target on the screen that the student identifies. You can allow students to make multiple attempts for incorrect answers.
- After all the words or images are correctly placed, choose Next to continue.
